SHILPA SHETTY - BIOGRAPHY:

Shilpa Shetty is undoubtedly one of the biggest names on the Bollywood scene, and there’s little doubt that she’s earned her place as an icon of India cinema alongside such stars as Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukherjee. Through several scandals and controversies, Shilpa has held her head up high with dignity -- making her an ideal role model for young girls.

Shilpa Shetty was born in a strict and traditional close-knit family that hails from the Bunt community of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka. Her striking looks made her an obvious candidate for modeling, and by the time she was 16, Shilpa she had kicked off her career by appearing in an ad for a popular Indian soft drink called Limca. She started her film career with Baazigar opposite Shahrukh Khan. Shilpa Shetty, sizzling starlet, who has fascinated audiences with her overwhelming, unconventional looks and stunning figure, almost worked with all top actors both south and North film Industries. In addition to appearing in almost 50 movies since making her 1993 debut, Shilpa has been a prominent figure on the world stage as of late -- something that’s due primarily to her innocent kiss with Richard Gere earlier this year(2007). Shilpa has also had to overcome prejudice and racism stemming from her controversial appearance on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother.

Shilpa Shetty has slowly but surely climbed the ranks of the Bollywood scene to become one of the industry's most sought-after performers, and with good reason. She’s been on the receiving end of several awards and accolades, and she’s proven that she can handle herself well under pressure. Shilpa has also shown no fear in terms of tackling exceedingly different characters; she can effortlessly jump from lightweight comedy to searing drama to effervescent musical.

In January 2007, Shilpa Shetty won the British reality television show "Celebrity Big Brother," after gracefully enduring racist taunts by other members of the show. She received 63 percent of viewers' votes, beating out thirteen other cast member. The win is also a diplomatic relief for both England and India, as British ministers worried how the image the publicly fought race dispute projected to the rest of the world. The win has also catapulted the Shetty into newfound fame far beyond her native India

SHILPA SHETTY - SOCIAL COMMITMENTS:
HIV-AIDS : In February 2006 Shetty lent her support to a BBC World Service Trust television show designed to tackle the problem of HIV-AIDS in India. The project, which also involved other celebrities Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, and Raveena Tandon in separate episodes, featured Shetty as she shadowed a young achiever whose work involved raising awareness about the condition.
PETA campaign advertisement: In March 2006, Shilpa Shetty participated in an advertising campaign against the use of wild animals in circuses. According to a PETA India press release, Shetty is a long-time PETA supporter and has assisted the campaign by posing for photographs in a figure-hugging tiger costume.
Romanov Vodka: In a May 2006 press conference, it was announced that Shetty would be the brand ambassador of Romanov Vodka. Sami Lala, President of United Spirits, said that Shetty was chosen for her status as an "aspirational icon", and that her "innate style, energy and attitude highlight the core attributes of the brand

SHILPA SHETTY - CONTROVERSIES:
Mafia links: In May 2003 a controversy erupted over alleged links between Shetty's parents and the Indian underworld.
Obscenity charges: In April 2006, a Madurai court issued non-bailable warrants against Shetty and Reema Sen for "posing in an obscene manner" in photographs published by a Tamil newspaper

Celebrity Big Brother racism controversy: During her time in Celebrity Big Brother, Shetty was allegedly a target of racism and bullying by other housemates, chiefly by Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd.

Richard Gere kissing incident: On April 15, 2007, Shetty was kissed several times in jest on the cheek by Richard Gere during an AIDS-awareness event. The pair had appeared at a press conference in New Delhi as part of a campaign to preach safe sex to truck drivers in India and promotion of AIDS awareness. The kiss prompted protesters, allegedly members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena, to beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks

This assumption makes Keys one of the most popular artists of the early years of the 21st century to have established a large fan-base of "fanatic" fans.
