Voted Star of the Future in the 2002 Toronto Film Festival, chiseled eyed Lisa Ray is a Canadian Bollywood actress who is at ease with both English and Hindi movies. Coming from the fashion world, Lisa has already proved her acting talent in the large screen.

Born to a Bengali father and Polish mother, Lisa joined the fashion world at the age of 16 in Canada. Her appearance on the cover page of a fashion magazine in Toronto instantly made her a celebrity with ad gurus queuing up for contracts. Her most prominent ad campaign is tied with the Lakme brand.

Lisa’s debut film was ‘Kasoor’ in 2000, which received considerable attention. Soon Canada settled Indian director Deepa Mehta cast her in the lead role in her film ‘Hollywood/Bollywood’, a huge success in Canada 2002. For this film, she was awarded the Star of the Future award by the Toronto Film Festival.
She also acted in 2004 in a romantic comedy ‘Ball and Chain’. The following year she appeared in ‘Seeking Fear’. Both the movies were huge hits in the West.

In 2005, she reunited with Deepa Mehta for the critically acclaimed film ‘Water’ with John Abraham in the male foil. Lisa creditably portrayed the misery of Indian widows abandoned in Varanasi in 1930s. Lisa won the Best Actress Award in Canada for the film. The movie was also nominated for Oscar in the foreign language category.

Water's shooting in India had to be scrapped following protests from Sangh Parivar outfits and it was completed in Sri Lanka.

Her upcoming films are ‘Kill Kill Faster Faster’, ‘I Can’t Think Straight’, ‘The World Unseen’, ‘All Hat’ and ‘Let’s the Game Begin’.

Desiring to be a novelist, Lisa Ray is a regular contributor of the Cosmopolitan and Indian Express. She is also hosting ‘Beauty Mantra’, a television show on the Indian TV channel Zee TV.
