Rani Mukerji is an award winning Indian film actress who works in Bollywood movies. Making her acting debut with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1996), Mukerji had her first commercial success with Karan Johar's romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), her biggest hit so far, and won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in the film. She later starred in many films, most of which fared below expectations. She re-invented her image with Saathiya (2002), which was commercially and critically successful.

Rani, know as "Queen of Bollywood", is a well known name in India. The bubbly girl with her effervescing smile, husky voice and twinkling eyes has won a place in the hearts of the Hindi moviegoers. She comes from a filmy family of Bengali origin. Rani is known for loads of concentration and tremendous personal effort in the roles she plays.

As one of Bollywood's leading ladies, Rani Mukherjee could be regarded as a well-kept secret from those not familiar with Indian cinema. Though she may not be known to film lovers outside the scope of Bollywood, Rani Mukherjee is one of the best-known and most celebrated personalities in her native India, a country that boasts the biggest film industry on the planet. Hailing from a famous cinema family from West Bengal, Rani had a relatively easy go for getting started in the business in her late teens. While her first big-screen appearance was a major flop, she has since gone on to prove herself as a multifaceted actress who is as highly regarded by the critics as she is by her millions upon millions of loyal fans.

Rani Mukherjee was born on March 21, 1978, in West Bengal, India. Her father, Ram, is a movie director, and other members of her extended family are also successful actors and actresses in the Indian film industry, including her cousin Kajol, another of the country's top actresses. She moved from Juhu to India's film capital, Mumbai, shortly after graduating from Maneckjee Cooper High School, to break into Bollywood cinema.

Following her debut in a Bengali film, Rani Mukherjee starred in her first Bollywood feature, Raja Ki Ayegi Barrat (1996), at the age of 18. The soon-to-be-crowned "Queen of Bollywood" got her first big break in 1998's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and has appeared in more than two dozen movies since. RANI MUKHERJEE – HONOURS & RECOGNITIONS

In 2005, Mukerji was a guest of honour at a state dinner to greet General Pervez Musharraf in company of the Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh. The government found out that she was Begum Musharraf's favourite Bollywood star and invited her. Mukerji was the only Bollywood star on the elite guest list.

She appeared along with various other Bollywood actors at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Delhi. For her three minutes dance act alongside Saif Ali Khan she was reportedly paid 1.5 crore rupees

In early 2007, the actress performed with Saif Ali Khan at Vaux-le-Vicomte for Lakshmi Mittal’s guests at his daughter's wedding

Two movies she has acted in have been India's entry to the Academy Awards. Paheli was the official entry for the 2006 Oscars. Hey Ram(2000) was an earlier entry.

The actress was honored by a largely foreign audience of 50,000 at the Casablanca Film Festival (2005) in Morocco where four of her movies were presented.

Black, Paheli and Veer-Zaara were all part of the final process of nomination selection for the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards amongst 60 foreign films in 2006.

Received Rajiv Gandhi Award in 2004.

Rani Mukerji is the first and only actress to have ever won both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress trophies in a single year (2004) at the Filmfare.

RANI MUKHERJEE – SOCIAL COMMITMENTS

In March 2004, Mukerji visited the sandy dunes of Rajasthan to boost the morales of the jawans. It was for a show where entertainers and stars visit Indian troops in far-flung regions to encourage them along with the NDTV team

In February 2005, Mukerji performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert to help raise money for the victims of Tsunami in company with other Bollywood stars

She was highly involved in the Temptations 2005 show in New Delhi. The actress helped to raise funds for the National Centre For Promotional of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), a leading disabled rights' group. Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra were also amongst the many who contributed to this cause

Later in 2007, one of Mukerji's sari's in Baabul, designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee, was auctioned off at a charity dinner. The proceeds went towards a home for girls who live on the Howrah platforms.

Mukerji donated her prize money, her half-share of 50 lakh rupees from her 2007 appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati with Preity Zinta, to the Holy Family Hospital. She said that this institution looks after children with heart problems which is a major setback in India.
